I am always creating simple, natural, non-toxic cleaning products for my home that really work. This Simple & Effective Non-toxic window cleaner is the only recipe I’ve used for years! It cleans windows and mirrors to a streak-free shine.
Many natural window cleaners on the market can be very expensive, and just not in my budget. At the same time, conventional sprays contain a host of ingredients that I don’t want in my home. This recipe only contains 4 simple household ingredients (one of them is water!), and costs pennies to make!
Simple & effective non-toxic window cleaner is a safer option
I want my children to be able to use all of the cleaning products in my home. I need to know that if they get some on their skin while they are doing their chores, they are not in any danger of absorbing or ingesting it, and can simply rinse it off.
Case in point:
While I was taking photos of my Simple & Effective Non-toxic Window Cleaner, I turned away from my two-year-old daughter for just a moment to grab a cloth. When I returned, she was spitting something out of her mouth.
In just a second, she had sprayed my window cleaner directly into her mouth!
Now, it was still an unpleasant experience for her, and I think the natural consequence of a bad taste will keep her from doing it again. However, that is all I had to worry about!
If that spray bottle had held conventional window cleaner, I would have had to quickly rinse her mouth out, possibly call Poison Control, and monitor her closely.
She would have ingested a range of chemicals that come with safety warnings right on the bottle. No thank you!
The ingredients:
My Simple & Effective Non-toxic Window Cleaner has only 4 simple household ingredients.
They are:
- white vinegar – removes dirt, smudges, and grime. It also sanitizes.
- rubbing alcohol – evaporates rapidly so no streaks form, removes spots, adds shine.
- cornstarch – glass is not perfectly smooth. Cornstarch helps keep water spots and streaks from forming in crevices. It is also a mild abrasive and can clean off microscopic dirt.
- water – dilutes above ingredients to work better in a spray bottle and last longer.
Here’s how to make it!
In a spray bottle, mix the following (I like to use a funnel to reduce spills):
- 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
- 2 Tbsp cornstarch
- 2 cups warm water
Shake well to disperse the cornstarch and mix ingredients. Use as needed on all windows and mirrors, and other glass items (such as picture frames).
Shake before each use, as the cornstarch will settle to the bottom as it sits.
