Today I’m going to show you just how easy it is to make your own Easy & Delicious Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce with just a couple basic ingredients. It’s healthy, and full of flavour, and incredibly easy to make. A great way to get back-to-basics in your home.
My kids love applesauce. They have some in their school lunches every day. It is a great, healthy snack when they are hungry at home. Sometimes, when I am short on time, I buy the bulk packs of individually-packaged applesauce and use those.
However, have you ever tried homemade applesauce?! The flavour is incomparable to the store-bought, and it costs just pennies to make. This is a great project to get your kids helping with. It’s always nice when they understand that not all food needs to come pre-made from a store 🙂 Furthermore, this recipe is sugar-free, so you can feed it to the kiddos guilt free!
Tools you may need:
- Large pot (I love my Le Creuset pot for this, a gift from my father-in-law)
- Knife
- Vegetable peeler
- Cutting board
- Wooden spoon
- Immersion blender (if you like really smooth applesauce)
How to make Easy & Delicious Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce
I promise you, this is very straighforward 🙂
First, wash and peel approx. 6 lbs of Cortland apples. I think Cortland make the best applesauce, as they are the perfect balance of sweet and tart, removing the need to add sugar. Apples with brown spots are perfectly fine in this recipe, and applesauce is a great way to use up older apples from your fridge.
Next, core and roughly chop the apples into fairly uniform-sized chunks. Don’t stress about this, as they are going to cook right down. It just helps them soften evenly when they are all about the same size 🙂
In a large pot heat apples with approx 2/3 cup of water and 1/2 to 3/4 Tbsp. of cinnamon. This is all to taste. Our family likes nice cinnamon flavour, so we lean towards more cinnamon than less.
Heat apple, stirring occasionally, over low heat, pressing with the back of a wooden spoon, until softened (approx. 45 mins).
If you like a smooth applesauce, you can use an immersion blender to blend it all up. If using a regular blender, be very careful, as the applesauce is very hot and may splatter! We like our applesauce less smooth for a more rustic texture, so I just use the wooden spoon to mash it up.
How to store homemade applesauce
Allow the applesauce to cool to room temperature before storing in your fridge. It will last approx. 7 to 10 days in the fridge.
Alternately, you can easily freeze applesauce for approximately 3 months in the freezer. Just package into airtight containers or freezer bags for a fresh, healthy treat whenever you need it!
If you’re a meal-prepper, package the applesauce into individual portions, freeze, and just give them a quick shake/stir after thawing.
This applesauce is also great in any recipes that call for unsweetened applesauce. Make sure the recipe suits a cinnamon flavour, though, as this is Cinnamon Applesauce!
And that’s it! Two ingredients, a bit of chopping and stirring, and you’ve got the most easy & delicious homemade cinnamon applesauce to enjoy! Serve it on it’s own, or with some granola for an apple-crumble experience! You can also add some to your morning oatmeal to step up your breakfast game (this will also help cool down oatmeal before you serve it to your kids).
