This is a classic chocolate pudding recipe just like Grandma used to make. A few simple ingredients and a few minutes create a luscious, creamy dessert with rich chocolate flavour.
Whipping up a batch of pudding is something most people don’t seem to do anymore. With the invention of boxed, instant pudding, it’s easier than ever to have a quick dessert.
However, making homemade pudding is so easy! And honestly? It doesn’t take much more time than the instant version. Another bonus? Simple ingredients (which you know I love).
Chocolate pudding is basically thickened milk with sugar and cocoa. The ingredients are stirred slowly in a saucepan until they begin to simmer.
How do I thicken Pudding?
Typically, we use cornstarch to thicken pudding. Simply mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry, and then mix in to the milk mixture. As the pudding begins to simmer, the cornstarch thickens it into a glossy, thick, creamy dessert.
How to prevent a skin on pudding
One downside of homemade pudding is that it forms a ‘skin’ (a thicker layer of pudding) on the top if not properly covered. Some people have no problem with this, but if you do, it’s easy to fix.
To prevent this, simply press a layer of cling wrap directly onto the warm pudding. When ready to serve, remove cling wrap.
How to serve chocolate pudding
This dessert is perfect any way you serve it, from simple to elegant. For a simple dessert, serve pudding in bowls or ramekins, nothing more!
For a fancier dessert, serve topped with strawberries and whipped cream. You can add various toppings, including chocolate cookie crumbs, sliced almonds, mini chocolate chips, etc. The options are endless.
How to make dairy-free chocolate pudding
In order to make this recipe dairy-free, the milk and cream can be substituted for various milk alternatives. Some good options are coconut milk, cashew milk, almond milk, or soy milk.
