Why should I use DIY non-toxic cleaning products?

Chemically-based cleaning products began to hit the North American market in the early 1900’s. The 1950’s saw a boom of sales. Toxic cleaners were marketed as a quicker, easier, better-smelling way to clean your home.

However, as time passed, people became more aware of potential hazards associated with using chemical cleaners in their homes. These are just a few concerns:

  • Many cleaning products contain a host of unpronounceable ingredients ( ethylene glycol monobutyl acetate??). Many can irritate eyes, skin, lungs, and throat.
  • Some chemical products can be fatal if they are ingested or swallowed (meaning they must be kept away from children)
  • Many products should only be used in well-ventilated areas, and with gloves, because they are dangerous to skin and lungs
  • More and more products on the market are being linked to various forms of cancer
  • Toxic cleaning products release VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the air. All family members and pets may breathe in these compounds.

Laws do not require companies to list all of the ingredients on cleaning products. Because of this, consumers are not able to make informed choices regarding what’s in their products!

While marketing executives work hard to convince the consumer (ie. us) that this is ‘totally fine’ and will leave your house cleaner than ever before, generations of people have used healthier alternatives that work just as well.

Why should I use essential oils to clean my house?

Essential oils are a great powerhouse for around the home. Among a host of benefits, essential oils make excellent additions to non-toxic household cleaners.

For example, tea tree oil is both antifungal and antimicrobial, making it a perfect ingredient to help clean bathrooms and kitchens.

Lemon essential oil is a powerful cleansing and purifying agent. Not to mention that it makes your house smell fresh and clean!

Other essential oils have a range of benefits, from calming properties to cleansing benefits. It’s only natural that they do so well added into non-toxic household cleaners.
