This easy French Toast is the ultimate breakfast or brunch treat. My kids have reported that this is the best French Toast recipe out there, which I consider high praise, given how many recipes there are online!
This recipe results in perfectly fluffy, sweet french toast, with just a hint of cinnamon flavour. Read on to see what makes our French Toast recipe the absolute best!
What is French Toast?
For those of you who have not been blessed with this perfect breakfast indulgence, French Toast is basically bread dipped in a custard of sorts, typically consisting of eggs and milk.
The bread is then fried on a skillet in some butter to create crispy, toasted edges and a fluffy baked inside. It’s divine served simply with maple syrup and berries, but you can go wild with various toppings.
What is the best bread for French Toast?
I always strive to use egg bread for this French Toast recipe. Egg bread is a slightly sweet bread that holds up really well to the egg mixture without going too soggy. It also has a great sesame seed crust that makes this French Toast recipe even better.
Tip: I prefer to buy unsliced egg bread so that I can slice it into nice, thick slices. Sometimes it’s already on the grocery store shelf, but if not, a quick call to the store bakery asking them to put one aside for you is a great option.
How Do I Make French Toast?
Mix together eggs, dairy, cinnamon, vanilla, maple syrup, and salt. Wisk in a shallow baking dish until fully blended.
Dip bread into the custard mixture and allow to soak for around 10 seconds, then flip and repeat on the other side. How long you soak the bread depends on the thickness of the bread. You want the bread to begin so soak up the custard without getting mushy.
Cook the bread on a buttered skillet over medium heat until browned and toasted on both sides, flipping once.
Serve the French Toast with maple syrup, berries, and whipped cream. Enjoy!
Variations
- Bread – we LOVE to use egg bread for this recipe, but you can totally use what you have. Texas Toast, regular sliced bread, or especially Brioche would be good alternatives. I’ve even used leftover hamburger and hotdog buns that need to be used up!
- Milk – we love a blend of milk and cream to create the best French Toast recipe out there, but you can switch this up, too. Feel free to use any dairy or non-dairy milk you like to create your French Toast
- Sweetener – while we love natural maple syrup, feel free to swap this out for white sugar, brown sugar, or honey. You can also omit the sugar altogether for an even healthier alternative.
