A hand is holding a bottle of golden transparent liquid

This two ingredient foaming hand soap takes seconds to make! It is less expensive than many other varieties of hand soaps, and is gentle on the skin.

There are so many reasons why it is worthwhile to make your own easy, two ingredient foaming hand soap. I have been making this recipe (if you can even call it that, it’s so simple) for my family for years and haven’t looked back. Here’s why and how I make it:

1. Simple ingredients

This two ingredient foaming hand soap is made out of two simple things: distilled water and liquid castile soap. That’s it! It doesn’t get much easier than that! I like to use Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap. It’s uses in the home are endless, so it’s worth buying the biggest bottle you can find! Also, castile soap contains quality, moisturizing ingredients including coconut and jojoba oils.

A bottle of castile soap lies on a wooden table beside a bottle of liquid hand soap.

I like to buy scented castile soaps such as Citrus as it contains natural citrus oils. This saves me needing to use essential oils in my soap, though you certainly could use a lemon essential oil for the added natural antibacterial properties.

If using this easy two ingredient foaming hand soap for babies, you may opt to use the Baby Mild Dr. Bronner’s castile soap rather than the aromatic ones. The choice is yours!

I prefer to use distilled water for my foaming hand soap as I have found that the soap tends to separate or get cloudy when mixed with tap water. Our tap water is very hard so I assume the mineral deposits have something to do with this. However, if you’re on a very tight budget, feel free to use tap water! It may just need a little shake every once in a while to redistribute the castile soap.

2. Foaming hand soap is inexpensive to make

Dr. Bronner’s Liquid castile soap, especially when purchased in a large bottle (preferably ON SALE!!!), is a good investment. Making a bottle of this easy, two ingredient foaming hand soap costs only about $1.40 CAD!! If I found soap for that price and that quality on a store shelf I would be dancing in the aisle! If you’re like me and reuse a foaming hand soap bottle, this is the most you will ever have to pay for quality soap!

3. Easy to make more as needed

This is fairly self-explanatory. I love not having to make an unplanned run to the store every time we run out of soap (which, with 3 kids, happens regularly). I also love not having to budget it into our groceries for the month (I only have to purchase the big bottle of castile soap every few months). Any time our soap is running low, a quick mix-up of this easy, two ingredient foaming hand soap, and away we go! We are never left with an empty bottle on the bathroom counter. And might I suggest it be a fun activity for the kids to make as well!

4. This two ingredient foaming hand soap is good for your microbiome

In the last 30-40 years, fears of bacteria invading our bodies have been on the rise. This has resulted in companies creating products claiming to be ‘antimicrobial’ or ‘antibacterial’. Ingredients like Triclosan are added to most conventional soaps, toothpastes, and cleaning agents. Unfortunately, this attempt at sanitizing our homes has largely backfired. Researchers now know that these products slowly destroy our healthy microbiome, or our gut health. Furthermore, they know that healthy gut bacteria is key in regulating and maintaining many other parts of the human body, including our mental health. Furthermore, we know know that bacteria are developing increasing resistance to treatment due to our overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial products.

An unhealthy microbiome was not a major concern for past generations. This is likely in part to the fact that people were more regularly exposed to naturally-occurring bacteria in their home environment. Just think of the good old black-and-white farm pictures of kids rolling in the mud and you know what I’m talking about!

This easy, two ingredient foaming hand soap resembles the soaps families used to use, but in a foaming soap rather than a bar, which frankly, I prefer! It effectively cleans while not completely obliterating certain bacteria that our bodies need to thrive!

5. A safe and natural way to keep little hands clean

This two ingredient foaming hand soap is safe to use on babies, people with eczema or psoriasis, the elderly, etc. It can be used to wash hands, faces, sinks, tubs, dishes, nearly anything!

Easy Two Ingredient Foaming Hand Soap Recipe:

It’s this simple:

In a foaming soap bottle, pour approximately 4 tbsp Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap (I eyeball it. It should fill up your bottle about 1/6 of the way up). Top up with distilled water. Shake, and it’s ready to use!
